Last week’s question
Which U.S. president served as an executioner before taking office, earning the nickname "Buffalo Hangman"?
a. Grover Cleveland
b. Millard Fillmore
c. Theodore Roosevelt
d. Martin Van Buren
The answer is A. In addition to being the only president to serve non-consecutive terms, Cleveland also has the distinction of being the only president to work as an executioner. In the 1870s, he was the sheriff of Erie County, New York, and performing executions was one of his duties. He earned $20,000 per year in the role, equivalent to approximately $374,000 today.
