Q: We see a lot of diabetes diagnoses at our facility, but are confused about when we might report a code from ICD-10-CM category E13 (other specified diabetes mellitus). This category is in addition to those for diabetes due to an underlying condition or drug and chemically induced, but what other kinds of diabetes are there?
A: I thought about that myself when looking at the codes because they're broken out into so many subcategories now compared to ICD-9-CM. It's really a limited-use category at this point. It's used for post-surgical diabetes, as well as genetic disorders that are causing diabetes. It's also for conditions that we don't know about yet that may fall into that category because secondary diabetes not elsewhere classified is included in category E13.
Diabetes that's due to an underlying condition (E08) or is drug- or chemical-induced (E09) will fall into other categories, so I encourage coders to rely on the Alphabetic Index to direct them to the correct code category.
