CMS has paid eligible hospitals and eligible professionals approximately $28.1 billion in meaningful use payments through the EHR Incentive Programs from the 2011 program year to the 2015 program year, according to data presented at the February 10 CMS HIT Policy Committee meeting.
The highest incentive payments were made during the 2012 ($9.8 billion) and 2013 ($9.9 billion) program years.
Eligible hospitals and critical access hospitals (CAH) received the most incentive dollars ($17.4 billion) since the program began. Medicare eligible professionals received less than half that amount at $6.8 billion whereas Medicaid eligible professionals received $3.4 billion.
As of February 1, 2015, more than 4,000 eligible hospitals successfully attested to meaningful use for the 2014 program year. Similarly, 127,815 eligible professionals successfully attested for the 2014 program year. This indicates that more eligible providers are successfully attesting than eligible hospitals, although eligible professionals are receiving less incentive dollars.
Medicare and Medicaid eligible professionals had not received 2015 program year incentive payments at the time the data was collected. However, eligible hospitals have already raked in nearly $1.6 billion.
