CMS added one modifier for 2015, but will not require its use until January 1, 2016. Hospitals will report modifier -PO (services, procedures, and/or surgeries furnished at off-campus, provider-based outpatient departments) on the UB-04 form (CMS Form 1450), or the 837i electronic submission, for each service provided at these locations.
The modifier, which is optional until next year, has no payment impact at this time, but CMS hopes to use it to show the frequency and types of services performed in off-campus, provider-based outpatient departments. CMS also plans to introduce two new place of service codes later this year for physicians to report on the CMS-1500 claim form or the 837p electronic submission to note services provided in off-campus, provider-based departments.
This tip is adapted from “CMS adds comprehensive APC logic in January quarterly I/OCE update" in the March issue of Briefings on APCs.
