A new CPT® code for arthrodesis, a joint fusion technique to relieve pain, of the sacroiliac joint has been added in 2015, while its Category III counterpart has been deleted. The new code is:
- 27279, arthrodesis, sacroiliac joint, percutaneous or minimally invasive (indirect visualization), with image guidance, including obtaining bone graft when performed, and placement of transfixing device
Code 27280 has been revised to specify arthrodesis of the sacroiliac joint by open approach. Each of these codes should be reported with modifier -50 (bilateral procedure) if performed bilaterally.
This tip is adapted from “Musculoskeletal and nervous system sections get new procedure, combination codes" in the February issue of Briefings on APCs.
