Baptist Health System rethinks budget, staffing to prepare for ICD-10 implementation

The ICD-10 delay forced many healthcare organizations to rethink their ICD-10 staffing and implementation plans. Baptist Health System in Birmingham, Alabama, devised a plan to prepare for the one-year delay of ICD-10 by revising its budget and relying on new graduates to fill coder positions.
"When we were getting ready for ICD-10, we did a very robust coder analysis," says Chloe Phillips, MHA, RHIA, corporate director for HIM and clinical revenue at Baptist Health System.
The health system sought input from coders as it developed a new plan for ICD-10 education and training. It also worked toward establishing coder retention plans, Phillips says.
