Second Quarter advice on PCS coding and documentation

Despite all the uncertainty surrounding the implementation of ICD-10-CM/PCS, the Cooperating Parties (i.e., the American Hospital Association, AHIMA, CMS, and the National Center for Healthcare Statistics) nevertheless decided that the farewell issue of Coding Clinic for ICD-9-CM (which was published in the first quarter of 2014) will remain the farewell issue.

Pursuant to that decision, the parties—believing it was more beneficial to coders and other providers who had started dual coding—opted to answer only questions regarding ICD-10-CM/PCS, and released the second edition of Coding Clinic for ICD-10-CM/PCS. So here we are.
Most of the advice in this edition centers on the coding of procedures in ICD-10-PCS. Although reviewing procedure notes was not previously a priority for most CDI programs, with the implementation of ICD-10-PCS, the coding of surgical and nonsurgical procedures will require a team approach to ensure a successful transition, which means CDI is expected to play a larger role.
