According to an ACDIS website poll posted on October 22, 86% of more than 300 respondents indicate their facility does not have an established career path for CDI staff members. That trend may be changing however as advanced CDI programs begin to explore ways to keep their experienced CDI staff engaged.

Facilities need to do a better job of assisting CDI staff members with the specialized training they need to succeed as they move through their careers, says Fran Jurcak, RN, MSN, CCDS, director of CDI practice at Huron Healthcare in Chicago, in the October edition of the CDI Journal.

CDI career ladders may mirror those of the professions most CDI specialists hail from, such as coding/HIM, nursing, or case management, where staff members receive additional benefits for earning an advanced degree, certification, and years of experience. A career ladder may offer different steps for additional job responsibilities such as physician education, peer reviews, data analysis, assistance with audit reviews, and other duties.

“People are always looking to better themselves,” says Dee Banet, RN, BSN, CCDS, CDI director at Norton Healthcare in Louisville, Kentucky, noting that when offered an opportunity for professional growth, staff typically respond positively.
