With HHS' recent release of its final rule, Administrative Simplification: Change to the Compliance Date for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS) Medical Data Code Sets, the healthcare industry now has a new ICD-10 implementation date: October 1, 2015.
But this isn't the first ride on the merry-go-round for many coders and other healthcare professionals. As a result, they may be wondering what they can do to make sure this date sticks.
One thing to do is to start talking about the reasons to move to ICD-10, says Donna Smith, RHIA, project manager and senior consultant with 3M Health Information Systems in Salt Lake City.
"I felt like one of the things [the industry] didn't do was publicize why we're making the switch to ICD-10," Smith says. "I think that's something we need to be talking about more, not just what we're doing, but why we're doing it."
Healthcare professionals are starting to talk more about very specific benefits instead of high-level generic reasons, Smith says. That will certainly help when talking with physicians. "Physicians want to know what's in it for them," Smith says.
So what is in it for physicians? First of all, better data about patient severity of illness and outcomes. ICD-10-CM allows physicians to provide a better picture of the patient's condition (as long as the physician documents those details).
Another advantage to physicians is better research data. "Can you imagine what our research data is going to look like in five years?" says Angie Comfort, RHIT, CDIP, CCS, director of HIM practice excellence for AHIMA in Chicago.
