Pay-per-view: CMS introduces modifier -L1 for lab tests in July quarterly I/OCE update

The July quarterly I/OCE update from CMS brought few new APCs or edit updates, but did deliver new modifier -L1. Hospitals will use the new modifier to submit outpatient laboratory tests paid under the Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule (CLFS) in certain circumstances to claim separate payment.
CMS announced this new modifier in March in MLN Matters® article SE1412 after the controversial packaging of clinical laboratory tests, previously paid under the CLFS, for claims on a type of bill (TOB) 13x in specific instances established in the 2014 OPPS final rule.
