CMS recently added HCPCS code C2644 (brachytherapy source, cesium-131 chloride solution, per millicurie), effective July 1. The unadjusted payment is $18.97 per millicurie. The code has been assigned to APC 2644 and given status indicator U (brachytherapy sources).
CMS created a new grouping to classify brachytherapy sources to separately identify them from other groups of seeds or sources, by mandate of the Social Security Act. The grouping must reflect the number, isotope, and radioactive intensity of the sources furnished.
Providers should notify staff in departments that provide brachytherapy sources of the change to ensure they report the appropriate number of units.
This tip is adapted from “CMS introduces modifier -L1 for lab tests in July quarterly I/OCE update” in the August issue of Briefings on APCs.
