Use the following questions to promote discussion and contemplation of various approaches to developing privacy and information security programs:
- Is the organization’s privacy and information security program based solely on the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules? If yes, how will this change in the future? If no, what are the priorities for continued evolution of the programs?
- Does the privacy and information security program include a Red Flags Rule component? Does it address identity theft and medical identity theft?
- Does the information security program include a PCI DSS policy and procedures? Has a PCI DSS self- assessment questionnaire been completed?
- How are privacy and information security priorities and requirements included in planning and implementing EHRs across the organization?
- How does the organization use social media strategies to further its mission, vision, and values? Has a strategic plan for social media been implemented? If yes, what are the results to date? How have privacy and information security issues related to social media been addressed? Has a social media policy been adopted? If yes, who is the owner?
- How does the organization guard against inappropriate use of secondary patient data?
