One way to plan ahead is to perform internal testing. This can help hospitals understand which processes will change after implementation and how those changes will affect workflow, said Mike Koehler, CPHIT, a director in the performance improvement division of Navigant Consulting, Inc.

"There's a lot of different moving parts," he said during Navigant Healthcare's webinar The Road to Clinical Diagnosis Transformation: Part I - Documentation & Systems Testing for ICD-10.
