Category S72.- (fracture of femur) includes an example of a new concept in ICD-10-CM, the Excludes1 and Excludes2 note:
- Excludes1, traumatic amputation of hip and thigh (S78.-)
- Excludes2, fracture of lower leg and ankle (S82.-)
- fracture of foot (S92.-)
- periprosthetic fracture of prosthetic implant of hip (T84.040, T84.041)
The Excludes1 note indicates that the codes cannot be reported together, so codes from series S72.- should never be reported with codes from S78.-
The Excludes2 note represents "not included here," which means that the condition represented is not included in the subsequent code series, but can be coded with it.
This tip is adapted from “ICD-10-CM anatomy refresher: Thigh” in the April issue of Briefings on APCs.
