AAPC recently introduced another option for coders to earn the required ICD-10-CM proficiency assessment after feedback from coders.
In order to maintain CPC, CPC-H, CPC-P, CPC-I, a coding specialty (excluding CIRCC), or CPMA credentials, coders are required to complete one of the two methods by September 30, 2015, one year after ICD-10-CM implementation.
The assessment options now include:
  • At your own pace assessment: Online assessment course including complete ICD-10-CM general code set training coupled with 150 questions and cases you can complete at your own pace.
  • Timed assessment: 75 multiple-choice, case-based questions you must complete in 3.5 hours.
The tests will confirm that coders are familiar with the ICD-10-CM format and structure, groupings and categories of codes, ICD-10-CM official guidelines, and coding concepts. Previously, AAPC only offered the timed assessment option.
The “at your own pace” option requires a 16-hour course with online exercises. The questions are not timed and coders are given unlimited attempts. The timed assessment contains a timed element and coders are given two attempts to pass the assessment for the $60 test fee. Both options allow coders to use their code books.
For more information on the assessment options, see www.aapc.com/ICD-10.
