With some major changes in look and form-but generally adhering to existing guidelines-coding for neoplasms serves as a microcosm of the changes providers will face when the transition to ICD-10-CM occurs October 1, 2014.
"For coders, the coding steps are not changing," says Betty Hovey, CPC, CPC-H, CPB, CPMA, CPC-I, CPCD, director of ICD-10 Development and Training for AAPC in Salt Lake City. "I tell coders that ICD-10-CM is just different."
Coders will still look the codes up in the Alphabetic Index, confirm in the Tabular Index, and follow the official guidelines or tabular instructions for clarification.
