Pay-per-view: Identify elements for appropriate E/M level

From 2004 to 2010, CMS outpatient claims rose ­approximately 4.2% annually as the site of service shifted to outpatient. More procedures are being performed in outpatient departments, and more hospitals are buying physician offices. In addition, laboratory services account for ­approximately 2.4% of Medicare expenditures. Hospitals need to find a way to manage all of that data.

Some private payers may follow CMS' lead, ­assuming the agency finalizes the proposed changes (at press time, CMS has not yet released the 2014 OPPS ­Final Rule). Other payers will not, which could create ­additional work for facilities.
