Q: Any word yet on when the LCDs will be updated to reflect ICD-10 codes?

A: Yes. CMS published Transmittal 1293 stating that LCDs and Articles with updates due to the ICD-10 implementation must be published in the Medicare Coverage Database no later than April 10, 2014. These will be renumbered but will not be considered new policies.

If the codes are translated from ICD-9 to ICD-10, the MAC is not required to vet the information through the Carrier Advisory Committee or to send the information through the public comment and notice process.

Providers must review these “translations” thoroughly once they are available to ensure they are accurate. They must also validate what impact, if any, these updates will have to their institution’s operational processes and reimbursement.
