Pay-per-view: CMS proposes additional packaging plans for 2014

Get ready for more packaged services, including laboratory tests and add-on codes, if CMS finalizes changes proposed in the 2014 OPPS proposed rule.

Over the past several years, CMS has packaged more and more services together in one payment in an effort to promote efficient delivery of services. OPPS packaging logic varies from not providing separate payment for certain low-cost drugs, supplies, and services to packaging the payment for services CMS considers related into a single payment. CMS has relied on the concept of packaging since it was first implemented, but over time the agency's interest in increasing packaging has grown.
