CMS recently assigned new status indicators to seven HCPCS codes, effective July 1. The following codes moved from status indicator K (non-pass-through drugs and biologicals) to E (items, codes, and services not paid under OPPS):

  • J3487, injection, zoledronic acid, 1 mg
  • J3488, injection, zoledronic acid (reclast), 1 mg
  • J9002, injection, doxorubicin hydrochloride, liposomal, doxil, 10 mg

All three codes are now subject to edit 28 (Code not recognized by Medicare; alternate code for same service may be available).

This tip is adapted from “CMS changes code status, adds APCs, modifier” in the August issue of Briefings on APCs.
