Pay-per-view: GEMs a useful addition to ICD-10-CM transition toolkit

General equivalence mapping (GEM) is a good tool to use to convert ICD-9-CM codes to ICD-10-CM, but it is only a tool. GEMs don't work as a substitute for actually coding. They will get coders to the correct neighborhood but won't take them to the front door.

"GEMs are a good starting point," says Lori Andersen, MS, assistant director, policy measures for the National Committee for Quality Assurance in Washington, D.C. "They will point you in the right direction."
