Last week’s question

Who was the first person to scientifically explore Machu Picchu, the “lost city” of the Incas?

a. Heinrich Schliemann
b. Hiram Bingham
c. Howard Carter
d. Indiana Jones

The correct answer is B. On July 24, 1911, American explorer Hiram Bingham rediscovered Machu Picchu, the “lost city” of the Incas. Although he was not a trained archeologist, Bingham conducted the first scientific study of the city. He may not have been the first outsider to visit the site. Heinrich Schliemann found the ancient city of Troy, while Howard Carter discovered King Tut’s lost tomb. Indiana Jones recovered the lost Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail, among other sacred artifacts.
