The correct answer is A. President Andrew Johnson purchased Alaska from Russia for the bargain price of $0.02 per acre (a total of $7 million). U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward signed the treaty with Russia for the purchase of Alaska March 30, 1867. Critics referred to the purchase as “Seward’s Folly” and “Johnson’s polar bear garden.”
