Physicians and other providers practice in many ­different areas within a hospital. To accurately code physician and provider services, coders must know and understand the place of service (POS) codes.

Coders must determine the correct POS code up front. Coders use the POS codes to determine physician/ provider E/M services codes. The POS also affects how coders report and bill facility codes, says Lori-Lynne A. Webb, CPC, CCS-P, CCP, CHDA, ­COBGC, an independent coding consultant in Melba, Idaho.
