On January 15, UnitedHealth Group Inc. and Mayo Clinic announced a new joint venture dubbed Optum Labs focused on joining data streams and handing them to researches to investigate how to improve healthcare and lower costs, according to a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article.

The merger will create “an environment where the healthcare industry can come together to combine information and ideas that benefit patients today while also driving long-term improvements in the delivery and quality of care,” according to an Optum release.
The WSJ article states such research could delve into claims records for more than 109 million people over 19 years from United and some five million clinical records from Mayo, with additional records and research being conducted with various other partners in the future.
“Bringing together, in one location, health information and insights from many contributors can provide a deeper understanding of important trends and patient care issues that no single organization could achieve on its own,” said Andy Slavitt, group executive vice president of Optum, in the release.
