Q: Is CMS deleting HCPCS code C9732 (insertion of ocular telescope prosthesis including removal of crystalline lens) for hospital reporting? This is a new code that we just started using and is required in order with pass-through device C1840 lens, intraocular [telescopic]). Is there a replacement for C9732?

A: CMS established new HCPCS code C9732 for calendar year 2012. In the July update to OPPS, this HCPCS code is being deleted. The AMA issued a Category III code 0308T (insertion of ocular telescope prosthesis including removal of crystalline lens)for the service and this code is reportable and payable under the OPPS beginning July 1.

According to Transmittal 2483 (July update to OPPS),HCPCS code C1840 (must now be billed with CPT code 0308T in order to receive pass-through payment. CMS assigned CPT 0308T to APC 0234, which is the same APC it assigned C9732, so the device offset remains the same.
Transmittal 2483 contains a listing of other Category III codes that are now reportable and payable under the OPPS.
