Answer: B

Here’s a little bit about Maria:
What are your current job responsibilities?
I am a reimbursement compliance analyst and chargemaster coordinator.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in health information management?
I started working at a community-based hospital in 1986 as a biller and was so interested in the clinical aspect of it that I worked my way up through clinics and decided 12 years ago to obtain my CPC and CPC-H. It is the best thing I ever did. It opened up many doors.

What do you like most about your job?
I work with coders, registration, finance, ancillary departments, and clinics on a daily basis and love the challenges (some days) and diversity. I especially enjoy the knowledge that I obtain. I am fortunate to say that I am never bored and love my job.

What is your favorite area of coding?
My favorite area is emergency medicine.

What is your least favorite area of coding?
My least favorite area is interventional, though this year is much better with the new CPT 2012 codes.

What are some of your hobbies?
I enjoy running, kayaking, biking, hiking and spending time with my husband and grandchildren.

Do you have a personal motto that you live by?
“Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.”
