Q: Does the October 2011 OPPS quarterly update include any newly created HCPCS device codes?

A : Yes, Transmittal 2296 describes two new device categories with pass-through status (status indicator H). The new codes are:

  • C1830 (powered bone marrow biopsy needle)
  • C1840 (lens intraocular [telescopic])

CMS instructions published in this transmittal indicate that facilities should bill C1840 with the following CPT® codes when the lens is provided:

  • 66982 (extracapsular cataract extraction removal with insertion of intraocular lens prosthesis [one stage procedure], manual or mechanical technique, complex)
  • 66984 (extracapsular cataract removal with insertion of intraocular lens prosthesis [one stage procedure], manual or mechanical technique)

CMS established a device offset of $221.71 for C1840, which it will deduct from the APC payment when C1840 is used, reported, and paid.
