Pay-per-view: Final regular ICD-9-CM code update continues trend of increased specificity

Beginning October 1, coders will have 17 additional V codes to report personal history of various conditions, as well as 40 new diagnosis codes for skin malignancies.

The new ICD-9-CM codes are part of the final regular update to ICD-9-CM before the switch to ICD-10-CM on October 1, 2013. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will make limited updates to both the ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes in 2012, and will only update the ICD-10-CM codes beginning in 2013.
