Over the course of 30 years in the HIM field, I have observed much trial and error on the part of HIM managers who have been pioneers in the EHR journey. Coinciding with AHIMA's 2011 theme of "Aiming High," I thought it appropriate to share some of the best practice tips and lessons from A to Z that I’ve learned through the years. I hope you will find them helpful as you develop your personal road maps to a more automated and meaningful EHR.

Tips, from A to Z

Assess the current processes and state of your HIM operations and infrastructure. This is the first step in a successful transition from paper to electronic records.

Beware of the barriers! Identifying the roadblocks and pitfalls in advance will help you navigate the tricky, winding road of implementation.

Conduct productivity studies early. Understanding your performance baseline will help you benchmark your future improvements realized as a result of the EHR.

Designate champions at the executive level who support your project and those within the HIM department who can serve in a lead role throughout your EHR project.
