Last week’s question
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes in which of the following tales?

a. A Study in Scarlet
b. None, Holmes never died
c. The Adventure of the Final Problem
d. The Hound of the Baskervilles

The correct answer is C. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wanted to devote more time to his historical novels, so he killed off Sherlock Holmes in The Adventure of the Final Problem, which appeared in print in 1893. In the story, Holmes and Professor Moriarty apparently plunge to their deaths over Reichenbach Falls. After public pressure to bring back Holmes, Conan Doyle released The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901, but implicitly set it before Holmes’ death. Two years later, Conan Doyle resurrected Holmes in The Adventure of the Empty House.
