Examine your facility's process for sending a claim out the door. Does it drop as soon as it is coded, or does someone in the billing office review it first?

Unfortunately, facilities often don't find out about problems with a bill until after it is out the door. To take a proactive approach, coders need to know what their common denials are; the best way to find out is to ask the billers.

With this information, coders can help create internal edits to catch problems before the bill goes out. Once a claim is caught, the coders can then use their expertise to fix the claim and get it paid in a timely fashion.

The tip is adapted from “Coders and billers: It's time to start talking” in the June issue of Briefings on APCs.
