The transition to ICD-10-CM/PCS will be here sooner than you think, so now is the time to start looking at how the transition will affect coding and documentation for facility emergency departments (ED).

By the middle of 2011, outpatient coders should learn about the structure, organization, and unique features of ICD-10-CM and begin learning about the general equivalence mappings (GEM) between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM, according to The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
