The upcoming conversion to the ICD-10-CM coding system will change more than just the codes placed on a claim. It will change just about everything in a physician practice or hospital department. 

As most healthcare professionals know, ICD-10-CM contains approximately 69,000 codes, a huge increase from the 14,000 codes available currently in ICD-9-CM. The increased number of codes will allow coders to better specify how, why, and where a patient was seen.
