Think the three-day payment rule affects only inpatient coders? Think again. Changes that took effect June 25 could affect outpatient coders—and potentially in a big way, experts say.

Under the old rule (prior to June 25), coders bundled only outpatient non-diagnostic services that occurred within the three-day window and that included an exact match of the outpatient diagnosis code with the inpatient principal diagnosis code.
