MRB recently asked several advisory board members for crucial tips that new HIM managers and directors should know as they learn their way around their job and department.

  • Trust your staff, says Chris Simons, RHIA, director of utilization management and HIMS and privacy officer at Spring Harbor Hospital in Westbrook, ME. If you’re new, don’t come in like gangbusters, which is a common flaw in those new to management, says Simons. “Instead, listen to your staff; they are the closest to the work and you have a lot to learn from them.”
  • Get to know HIM directors at other hospitals in your area, says Monica Pappas, president of MPA Consulting in Long Beach, CA. You may share some medical staff members, plus it is often beneficial to swap ideas and insights. Other HIM directors can become a good sounding board and resource, she says.
  • Initiate meetings or lunches with other department managers, says Pappas. New directors should scope out whom they’ll need to work with (e.g., HR, patient financial services, patient access, medical staff office) and hold an introductory meeting. Jean S. Clark, RHIA, CSHA, service line director of HIMS at Roper Saint Francis Healthcare in Charleston, SC, agrees. “Establishing a relationship early will go a long way toward communicating that you are a team player,” she says.
