Pay-per-view: Fewer new ICD-9-CM codes for 2011

Coders will have fewer new ICD-9-CM codes to deal with in 2011, but they should still be aware of the changes. 

Keep an eye on your local coverage determinations to make sure contractors update them to include the new codes, says Shannon McCall, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-I, CCDS, director of coding and HIM at HCPro, Inc., in Marblehead, MA. You should also watch for medical necessity denials with the new codes.

For example, ICD-9-CM now includes code 278.03 (obesity hypoventilation syndrome), which may be useful and applicable in places like sleep centers. Providers need to make sure any services that were covered for the previous nonspecific code (278.8, other hyperalimentation) are also covered for the new code, McCall says.
