When a patient needs long-term dialysis, his or her physician can choose between various options to create easy access to the patient’s bloodstream for hemodialysis.

During hemodialysis, blood is taken from the patient’s body at an access site, cleaned in a dialysis machine, and returned to the patient’s body.
