Last week’s question
Who was America's second man in space?
  1. Alan Shepard
  2. John Glenn
  3. Neil Armstrong
  4. Scott Carpenter

Answer: Last week’s question was somewhat unclear. It should have asked who was the second American to orbit the Earth. The correct answer is Scott Carpenter. He flew the second manned U.S. orbital flight May 24, 1962. Carpenter piloted his Aurora 7 spacecraft through three revolutions of the earth, reaching a maximum altitude of 164 miles. The spacecraft landed in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 1,000 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral after four hours and 54 minutes of flight time. Virgil “Gus” Grissom piloted the second and final suborbital Mercury test flight July 21, 1961. On March 23, 1965, he served as command pilot on the first manned Gemini flight, a three-orbit mission during which the crew accomplished the first orbital trajectory modifications and the first lifting reentry of a manned spacecraft. He subsequently served as backup command pilot for Gemini 6.
