Pay-Per-View: CMS discusses three-day rule, pulmonary rehab

CMS representatives discussed the three-day rule and pulmonary rehab supervision during a Hospital & Hospital Quality Open Door Forum (HODF) conference call March 4. The representatives also provided information about the Hospital Quality Alliance and the Reporting Hospital Quality Data for Annual Payment Update.

A CMS representative provided follow-up information about the three-day inpatient rule. CMS has received questions regarding whether nondiagnostic (therapeutic) services provided during the three calendar days prior to an inpatient admission—but unrelated to the admission—must be billed as inpatient services or may be billed as outpatient services.
