I/OCE edits result in more HCPCS codes, fewer APCs

More HCPCS codes are available for use; Medicare Claims Processing Manual Transmittal 1872 reflects a net increase of their number. CMS also added seven new modifiers but decreased the number of APCs. The changes in Transmittal 1872, which updates the I/OCE, became effective January 1.

“The number of HCPCS codes continues to grow,” says Dave Fee, MBA, product marketing manager for outpatient products at 3M Health Information Systems in Murray, UT. “We have a net increase of 170 HCPCS codes more today than we did last year. That speaks to the need for education that hospitals need to keep up with all the changes.”
