CMS posted fact sheets and checklists on its Web site to help guide providers through the transition to HIPAA version 5010, which providers must implement by January 1, 2012.

By this date, providers must be ready to submit claims and other transactions electronically using an updated version of the HIPAA standards. Version 5010, which replaces version 4010, is an updated national standard used in billing software that can accommodate the longer and more detailed ICD-10 codes.

To access the following fact sheets and checklists, go to the CMS Web page for HIPAA version 5010:

  • Preparing for Electronic Data Interchange Standards: The Transition to Versions 5010 and D.0 Fact Sheet
