Last week’s question
Which city hosted the first Winter Olympics?
  1. Chamonix, France
  2. Lake Placid, New York
  3. Oslo, Norway
  4. St. Mortiz, Switzerland
The correct answer is A. The first Olympics after World War I occurred in 1920 in Antwerp, Belgium, and featured figure skating and ice hockey. The following year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided that the organizers of the 1924 Summer Olympics in France would also host a separate "International Winter Sports Week", under the patronage of the IOC. This week of events in Chamonix, which actually lasted 11 days, featured more than 200 athletes from 16 nations competing in 16 events. The IOC decided in 1925 to create a separate Olympic Winter Games, and retroactively designated the 1924 Games in Chamonix the first Winter Olympics.
