The revised CPT codes for hemorrhoids may be problematic for coders. Avoid confusion by developing a table or grid to clarify the new guidelines.
Coders now will select codes based on the type of hemorrhoid (i.e., external, external thrombosed, internal, internal thrombosed, or internal and external) and the type of procedure (i.e., incision, rubber band ligation, ligation, excision, injection, thermal destruction, cryodestruction, or hemorrhoidopexy).
Coders must ensure that they have complete documentation of the type of hemorrhoid and the type of treatment for those hemorrhoids.
This tip is adapted from “2010 CPT: Tumor excisions, facet joint injections among most significant changes” in the February issue of Briefings on APCs.
