Last week’s question
Which is the only U.S. state to have been an independent republic?
  1. Alaska
  2. California
  3. Florida
  4. Texas
The correct answer is d. The Republic of Texas was an independent state in North America, bordering the United States and Mexico, that existed from 1836 to 1845.
Formed as a break-away republic from Mexico during the Texas Revolution, the state claimed borders that encompassed an area that included all of the present U.S. state of Texas and parts of present-day Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Wyoming.
