Congratulations to this week’s winner, Diane Kriston, RHIT, coder for Bay Park Community Hospital in Oregon, OH. Diane was the first person to correctly answer this question:

What ICD-9-CM procedure code should you report for a Whipple procedure (radical pancreaticoduodenectomy)?
a. 52.53
b. 52.6
c. 52.7
d. 52.80

Answer: 52.7

Here’s a little bit about Diane:

What are your current job responsibilities?
My current job duties include coding and charging for ER, laboratory/radiology, surgeries, and short stays. I also started training on inpatient three weeks ago.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in health information management?
I decided to earn my coding certificate, and the organization forgot to put a cap on the number of people taking the test. There were about 80 people taking it, so they asked whether any of us would consider the two-year program to be an RHIT—so I switched.

What do you like most about your job?
I like that every day seems to be different. You don't have a chance to become stale or bored.

What is your favorite area of coding?
Today, it is inpatient coding because I'm excited about learning it.

What is your least favorite area of coding?

What are some of your hobbies?
I love to read, watch baseball and football, and go out to eat. Shopping should be in there somewhere as well.

Do you have a personal motto that you live by?
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.
