Here’s a little bit about Isela:

What are your current job responsibilities?
I manage the chart audit department at Mount Sinai Medical Center, a 955-bed acute-care hospital in Miami Beach, FL. We handle many tasks, from insurance defense audits to concurrent and focused audits. We are also part of the hospital’s Recovery Audit Contractor team, as well as the clinical documentation improvement team.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in health information management?
I have always had an interested in healthcare and medical management. I was torn between pursuing a career in medicine or focusing on a finance degree. In the end, I feel I found a career through which I could utilize my clinical background while maintaining a financial focus. To me, it’s a nice fusion of my interests and talents.

What do you like most about your job?
It appeals to my meticulous nature. It also gives me the opportunity to get involved in billing and coding of all areas of the hospital and make a financial impact, as well as ensure we stay compliant.

What is your favorite area of coding?
Interventional radiology. It is one of the more complex areas of coding, and I always love a challenge.

What is your least favorite area of coding?
Evaluation and management coding, and it’s only getting more challenging.

What are some of your hobbies?
I am very involved in dog rescue. I am a volunteer with Dachshund Rescue of South Florida, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to giving these wonderful pets a loving home. I have to say the dogs give me perspective; they rescue me right back.

Do you have a personal motto that you live by?
“The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.”
