CMS has added new information to its Hospital Compare Web site pertaining to how frequently patients return to a hospital after discharge, according to a July 9 press release.

On average, one in five Medicare beneficiaries who are discharged from a hospital today will re-enter the hospital within a month, according to CMS. Readmissions may show "how well the facility did the first time around," the press release states.

The new data will include information about 30-day readmissions for heart attack, heart failure, and pneumonia. Previously, the Web site only included mortality rates for each of these three conditions.

"Providing readmission rates by hospital will give consumers even better information with which to compare local providers," said Charlene Frizzera, CMS acting administrator, in the press release. "Readmission rates will help consumers identify those providers in the community who are furnishing high-value healthcare with the best results."

The Hospital Compare Web site has been active since 2005. In 2008, the site had more than 18 million page views. In 2009, it has received 1 million page views each month thus far.
