Countdown to ICD-10: Devise a four-year training plan

Although coders need not put their nose to the ICD-10 grindstone for another few years, that doesn’t preclude HIM directors from devising a four-year plan to map out how they intend to educate staff members about this monumental change.

"Even though 2013 sounds like it’s really far away, I think that’s a risky conclusion," says Sue Bowman, RHIA, CCS, director of coding policy and compliance at AHIMA in Chicago. "People should really take advantage of these years and not think that it’s too early to get started."
