"The Commission has raised the bar again for 08," Mark Leavitt, MD, PhD, chair of CCHIT, said in the press release. "Our Inpatient EHR standards have been updated, with new requirements including the ability to exchange medication and allergy information electronically, eliminating a major source of potential error as patients enter or leave the hospital."

Epic also received CCHIT Enterprise certification because it met the highest standards. These standards require vendors to have certified products for ambulatory, inpatient, and ED settings that are also interoperable.

Applications are open for 2008 certification of the following:

  • Ambulatory EHRs with options for additional certification in child health and cardiovascular medicine
  • Inpatient EHRs
  • ED EHRs
  • Enterprise EHRs

CCHIT will accept applications on a continuous basis through March 31, 2009. CCHIT will also accept applications for health information exchange 2009 certification through August 16, 2009.
